Local Heroes

Chris Davy

Owner of the multi award-winning Rose and Crown Hotel in Romaldkirk, Chris Davy also plays an active role in promoting the area as a visitor destination. He is chairman of the County Durham Area Tourism Partnership and is one of the face's for North East England’s Passionate people, Passionate places campaign.

Chris is certainly passionate about good food. He says... the kitchen is the 'engine room' - it's what drives a successful business. Top quality ingredients... locally sourced where possible ... carefully cooked... and competently served are the key. In Teesdale we are really fortunate to have some excellent local producers which gives us the opportunity to showcase the best.

A chef and hotelier all his working life, he has an obvious flair for food and an innate understanding of what hospitality really means. He trained at the Westminster Hotel School in London, later becoming manager of the Chester Grosvenor Hotel, where he met his wife Alison. Together, they successfully ran the Black Swan at Ravenstonedale in the Eden Valley in Cumbria before settling at The Rose and Crown at Romaldkirk, an 18th century coaching inn nestling on the village green, near Barnard Castle in County Durham.

Over their 16 years of ownership, Chris, Alison and team have transformed The Rose and Crown into an idyllic, country retreat with that famous North East welcome.

Offering peace, relaxation and easy access to Teesdale, it is little wonder that The Rose and Crown has won so many awards including AA Pub of the Year for England, Les Routiers ‘Hosts of the Year for UK and Ireland’ and The Good Hotel Guide César Award ‘Inn of the Year’.
